Supports for people with disabilities
Independent Living Cenentre Kingston Programs & Services:PEER SUPPORT PROGRAMSPeer Support occurs when accessing any of the programs at the Centre. The majority of staff, board and volunteers have a disability and understand the impact of dealing with barriers related to a disability, and the value of being treated with dignity. The Centre facilitates peer support activities that include one to one peer support, a monthly dinner club at various local restaurants and weekly peer groups at the Centre. INFORMATION SERVICES ILCK provides information on services, and programs available to persons with disabilities. Some of the most common requests include affordable and accessible housing, accessible transportation and income supports. INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Assists individuals develop the skills that help them deal effectively with personal and environmental barriers as a result of having a disability. Disability management and skills training meetings are facilitated to build skills in areas of barrier removal to accessing Ontario Disabilities Support Program. ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM Offers free public Internet and computer access for the Kingston community. The Centre computers are equipped with current accessible hardware and software. COMPUTER TRAINING The Centre provides one-to-one training and group workshops on a variety of topics that include adaptive computer technologies, introduction to Word, Excel, and the Internet. DIRECT FUNDING PROGRAM - SELF MANAGED ATTENDANT SERVICES Direct Funding provides individuals with a physical disability the opportunity to become employers of their own attendant services. The program allows individuals the flexibility to hire, train and manage their own personal care. PUBLIC AWARENESS & EDUCATION PROGRAMS Services and resources provide disability-related information to the community. The ILCK can assist in answering requests through the staff, library, website and on-site resources or refer individuals to the appropriate agency or service. FOOD FOR THOUGHT A Pan-Canadian initiative promoting the healthy eating goals of persons with disabilities. Food for Thought workshops include: Identifying and Understanding Community Resources; Promoting Active Living; Nutrition Essentials; Meal Planning and Preparing a Meal. ACCESS TO EMPLOYMENT Access to Employment will assist persons with disabilities to develop the skills to gain and maintain employment. Participants will receive support in disability management and problem solving skills to maximize their employability. Through local employer relationships Independent Living Centre Kingston will inform, enhance and remove barriers by supplying Disability/Sensitivity training; strategies and tools to understand and support a diverse workforce as it pertains to employees with disabilities.
