ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Offers free public Internet and computer access for the Kingston community. The Centre computers are equipped with current accessible hardware and software (Zoom Text; Dragon Naturally Speaking; Jaws; Kurzweil 3000; Read & Write Gold; Inspiration; and a number of freeware accessibiltiy programs).

COMPUTER TRAINING

The Centre provides one-to-one training and group workshops on a variety of topics that include adaptive computer technologies, introduction to Word, Excel, and the Internet.

DIRECT FUNDING PROGRAM - SELF-MANAGED ATTENDANT SERVICES

The Program
This is an innovative program enabling adults with physical disabilities to become employers of their own attendants. Attendants assist with routine activities of living, such as dressing, grooming and bathing. As an employer, you would be fully responsible for managing your own employees within a budget that is developed on an individual basis.

  • Live where you like (program portable throughout Ontario)

  • Do I qualify?
  • The program is funded by the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto (CILT) and operates within guidelines from the Government of Ontario

  • Criteria for eligibility
  • You are age 16 or over
  • You are a resident of Ontario
  • You require attendant services due to a permanent physical disability
  • Your attendant service needs have been stable over the past year
  • You are able to schedule attendants and make alternative arrangements
  • You are capable of understanding and carrying out the responsibilities as an employer of one or more attendant workers
  • You are capable of managing and accounting for expenditure of funds that would be granted to you

DISABILITY MANAGEMENT SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM

Do you need financial help from the government because of new or existing barriers to participation in daily life? Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) is an Ontario Government program that provides financial and employment assistance for people with disabilities. Independent Living Centre Kingston provides a Disability Management Skills Training Program that assists people with disabilities apply for ODSP.
Information Services helps applicants understand:

  • Their rights and responsibilities
  • How to complete the application package
  • The Appeals Process

  • Skills Building Services helps applicants:
  • Understand disability related barriers
  • Communicate disability related barriers
  • Communicate effectively with doctors
  • With referrals to legal services when required

  • Applicants will:
  • Learn to understand the process
  • Lead the process
  • Learn from persons with disabilities
  • Develop a positive attitude towards disability

  • All services provided with disability accommodations (assistance based on your disability)

INFORMATION SERVICES

ILCK provides information on services and programs available to persons with disabilities. Some of the most common requests include affordable and accessible housing, accessible transportation, and income supports.

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAMS

Peer Support occurs when accessing any of the programs at ILCK. The majority of staff, board, and volunteers have a disability, understand the impact of dealing with barriers related to a disability, and the value of being treated with dignity. ILCK facilitates peer support activities that include one to one peer support, a monthly dinner club at various local restaurants and weekly peer groups at ILCK.

PUBLIC AWARENESS and EDUCATION PROGRAMS

REGISTERED DISABILITY SAVINGS PLAN

The RDSP is a new federally registered savings plan that is delivered by the Canada Revenue Agency. It is designed to ensure long-term financial security for people with disabilities. Beneficiaries may receive the added benefit of government grants and bonds. For more information: RDSP
