International Day of Persons with DisabilitiesThe annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which was held on December 3rd, aims to promote an understanding of disability issues, the rights of persons with disabilities and gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities. The Day provided an opportunity to mobilize action to achieve the goal of full and equal human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities, established by the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982.Independent Living Centre Kingston, and the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee of the City of Kingston, marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities by celebrating the empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities. The City of Kingston’s Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC) advises Council on how to make the municipality more accessible to people with disabilities. For more information: Profile: Independent Living Centre Kingston Independent Living Centre Kingston is a community based, cross-disability not for profit organization that provides resources, support and programs to people with disabilities, the community, local organizations and business. ILCK’s innovative programs and services empower people with disabilities and promote greater accessibility through public education. The Centre offers Peer Support Programs, Information Services, Independent Skills Development Services, Access To Technology Program, Technology Training, Direct Funding Program - Self Managed Attendant Services, Access to Employment Program, Business Services and Public Awareness and Education Programs that empower people with disabilities, and promotes greater accessibility through public education. People with disabilities can and want to contribute socially, politically, economically and culturally. Independent Living Centre Kingston is dedicated to making our society and community a place where people with any type of disability can exercise their rights and responsibilities as full Canadian Citizens. This Years Theme Theme for 2009: “Making the MDGs Inclusive: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world”. The theme has been selected to draw attention to and promote a better understanding of disability issues and mobilize action for the empowerment of persons with disabilities. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are a set of development goals for the global community aimed at ending the most extreme inequalities with respect to hunger, poverty, gender and health, as well as goals to protect the environment and commit to development.
